Renovation process of our “Kominka” office

Prior to renovation

When we purchased this property, the “Kominka” had a tilted two storey extension attached to it. This extension not only ruined the aesthetics of the “Kominka” but it was also not taking an advantage of its context, blocking the view overlooking the neighbouring rice field.

During construction

“Kominka” after demolishing its extension, exposing its strip foundation.

Upon removal of its original floor, timber posts and stone footings were exposed. Due to a century of exposure to the environment, the original timber posts had become weak. We therefore lifted the floor beams with a hydraulic jack in order to create a level floor, and removed the damaged part of the old posts. Where necessary, concrete footings were inserted below.

The original “Kawara” roof-tiles were  removed in order to install a new water proof membrane. This was then covered with a galvanised steel sheet roofing.

Post renovation

Our “Kominka” office after renovation. A timber deck was created on top of the foundation where the extension once stood to take the advance of the scenery overlooking the neighbouring rice field.

The living and dining room with a view overlooking the neighbouring rice field. The traditional sliding doors allow the internal space to  open up to take advantage of the external environment, but can be closed when one feels exposed to create a more cosy atmosphere.
